Nat Sec Press was established to publish work in exactly that space.
We publish evidence-led work that takes the practical implementation of theory seriously, developing ideas with real-world decision-making in view.
Beyond abstract debates
Much of the most insightful national security thinking never fits neatly into traditional publishing lanes. It’s too practitioner-focused for purely academic outlets, yet too niche for trade publications.
That gap is where valuable work often disappears.
Nat Sec Press exists to give this work a home.
We publish books—including short reads—and handbooks that connect evidence to consequence, research to decision-making, and analysis to the real systems people operate within.
If your work helps people think better, decide better, or do better—especially under pressure—it belongs in this conversation.
Rigour with responsibility
Publishing in national security is not neutral. Choices about framing, reproduction, and emphasis shape how material is interpreted and used downstream—often reaching those already carrying harm long after the analysis has moved on. Editorial decisions echo beyond the page, into the lives of people for whom these issues are not abstract, historical, or resolved.
We expect our authors to take that responsibility seriously, writing with care for those most impacted beyond the page.
That means strong evidence bases, methodological clarity, and ethical judgement applied during the writing process—not outsourced to disclaimers or left to readers to manage after the fact. It also means understanding that interesting is not the same as necessary, and that some material carries implications beyond its analytical value.
Rigour, here, is not just technical. It is contextual.
Writing for the world as it is
National security work unfolds in messy environments where individuals and communities bear real harm, shaped by overlapping jurisdictions, imperfect data, institutional constraints, political pressure, and human limits.
We are not interested in polishing that away.
We are interested in work that acknowledges that complexity —remaining clear-eyed about the trade-offs, risks, and unintended effects.
An independent press, by design
Nat Sec Press is independent so editorial judgement is focused on quality, relevance, and responsibility.
We work closely with authors, support practitioner-led voices, and take seriously the obligation that comes with publishing in a field where the stakes are high.
If you’ve ever thought someone should write this—that someone might be you.
